William Butterworth

I am proud to be a member of the METRO GAVS Steering Committee because I believe it has an instrumental role to play in ensuring that the voice of the local community is heard and, where appropriate, acted upon. In my field of the environment, such a role is crucial. It is a byword to say that we spend our lives surrounded by the neglect and abuse of the environment. This neglect and abuse are writ large in the communities in which The Design Charity does its work.

As a qualified landscape architect with years of service in the business and charitable sectors I feel my experience supports the smooth functioning of the steering committee and the achievement of its avowed aims. My knowledge and expertise in the landscape, garden and environmental sectors is supplemented by an abiding interest in the arts. My management skills, developed to cope with the demands of the business world, are tempered by an empathetic approach to problem solving required in the charitable sector.

I have the ability to listen carefully and sensitively reflect on all issues before expressing an opinion. Finally, as a designer, I think I bring collaborative creative problem-solving skills to the steering group table.
